TREES ON WOODCOTE GREEN

Trees were a feature of the Green before World War II, as this photo in the Sutton Library archives shows.

Since then, some have been lost to age and storm. In recent years, Sutton Council has planted saplings after requests from Woodcote Green Residents’ Association. For example, there are sweet chestnuts on the side facing the street called Woodcote Green: see the close-up below.

In early 2020 more saplings arrived, eight of them on the Green near Woodcote Road and others on Woodmansterne Lane. At the council’s request, members of the committee and their families have been watering them three times a week. You can recognise this year’s planting by the shiny supporting poles. On the Green itself, the new planting is of hornbeam and sliver birch. Note the white bark of the birch and the differences in the leaves. Below you can see (from left to right) two hornbeam saplings, the foliage of a hornbeam, and a silver birch.
